I got my nails done a while back, and it was the first time I had gotten non-acrylic fake tips. The girls at Valley say all that grinding is unnecessary; in fact, they believe that nail salons use the electric grinder to keep your real nails weak so you keep coming back for more and more appointments for acrylics.
